Family Planning Options

Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are medications that prevent pregnancy. The "pill" is a hormonal treatment that may contain combinations of the hormones estrogen and progestin or progestin alone.
An IUD is a device placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Skyla, Mirena and Paraguard IUDs can last 3, 5, or 10 years respectively.
Nexplanon is a contraceptive, small, flexible implant that is inserted just under the skin of the left or right upper arm and lasts for up to three years.
Depo Provera is a hormone injection that lasts up to three months to prevent pregnancy.
NuvaRing is a form of contraception and prevention against pregnancy. This vaginal ring works the same way as the birth control pill, releasing estrogen and progestin into the bloodstream to prevent the ovaries from producing mature eggs. The hormones are administered differently through this device.
The birth control patch is a newer birth control option that has become popular in recent years. The patch is a thin, beige, piece of plastic cloth that adheres to the skin and is used to prevent pregnancy. The brand name that most physicians recommend is Ortha Evra.
Essure is a permanent, non-surgical birth control procedure performed in our office. Laparoscopic tubal ligation is a permanent birth control procedure performed at Conway Medical Center.
